Tendering Bloemendaal

LIGHT REVOLUTION IN BLOEMENDAAL; PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES CREATE GREEN STREET LIGHTING

BLOEMENDAAL, June 2019 - Circular, sustainable street lighting with a purely Dutch look, produced by people distanced from the labour market. Bloemendaal Municipality managed to get this done for the cores of Bloemendaal and Aerdenhout and currently 50 old fixtures and masts are being replaced here every day by the new Luxis and Friso Kramer specimens. After an ingenious tender in which the municipality set high standards, the Amsterdam lighting company Lightwell emerged as the winner. The result left no room for doubt and the first of more than 1,200 fixtures are now being installed. This is in line with the region's sustainability ambition, in which various municipalities have agreed to go all out to achieve the objectives of the Paris Climate Agreement.

Circular municipality

In the summer of 2018, the Bloemendaal Municipality signed a covenant with which it set itself the goal of circular procurement. This means that it requires suppliers to provide insight into the environmental impact of their products. The Metropolitan Region of Amsterdam supports the initiative, which is also aimed at socially aware purchasing, i.e. with an eye for people and working conditions. Mayor Elbert Roest is proud: "The fact that Bloemendaal managed to successfully include issues such as circularity in a tender is an achievement to be proud of. And of course it was exciting because we were not sure whether the market was ready for it. Lightwell proved to be, giving us a very clear insight into how they produce their products sustainably and how they are constantly looking for improvements in the production chain". For Virgil Warnars, Lightwell's sales director, the win was less of a surprise: "We have been working on this for years and our engineers have a lot of knowledge to implement it. For example, our engineer Florian Mesch graduated Cum Laude from TU Delft on this subject and we have been producing at a social employment company for years. There, we put people with a disadvantage on the labour market to work producing the fittings, including the fittings for Bloemendaal. That way, circularity and social production are in good balance.

Friso Kramer design

Apart from the production method and environmental impact, Bloemendaal naturally also wants beautiful street lighting. The luminaires are designed according to the Dutch Design principle: minimalist and in balance with the environment. The recently deceased iconic designer Friso Kramer (1922-2019) is the designer of the luminaires that will be placed on the low masts. He had been associated with Lightwell since early 2011 and helped the then small start-up company with product development and design. His death brought him back into the spotlight, partly because his Revolt chair is in the collective memory of many Dutch people, just like the Friso Kramer LED luminaire that will be installed in Bloemendaal. With this lighting, Bloemendaal will be guaranteed good lighting for 20 years and the installations will be completely up-to-date again. The work takes place before and after the summer holidays.

About Lightwell

Lightwell's team of engineers & industrial designers aims to provide society with the latest Smart City technology. For example, the innovative company has developed the Lightmotion, a smart light tower that can charge an electric car, be equipped with an environmental sensor and also provides access to WiFi and soon 5G, among others. By combining design with intelligent lighting systems, Lightwell has gained a prominent place in the public lighting market and is active in several European countries, including Austria, France, Belgium and Sweden.
